Beyond Borders: An Afghan Refugee’s Entrepreneurial Journey

My name is Ahmad Mudasser Wahidi but most people call me Milad it’s my nickname. Originally my parents are from Kabul Afghanistan. My school days in Pakistan were memorable and I enjoyed it and learned a lot from my Pakistani teachers. This was an important building block to get me to where I am today.

When I was in 7th Standard my father left us and got another married then my uncle was supporting us financially till the completion. After completing High School, I was unable to get admission to University which was the reason behind my wasted 5 years of my Life without studying.

I was working in Afghanistan in a Guest House as a Waiter and dishwasher then I got a chance to go to Dubai for work I worked there as a Security guard in a shop in Deira Dubai after that I came back to Pakistan and 6 months I have work in Karachi in a warehouse. After that I came back to Peshawar to get married in that time I started work in Taroon Wedding Hall, Then Suddenly I heard about the DAFI scholarship, and later on, I had the chance to complete my studies at the University of Peshawar with the Dafi Scholarship.

During my studies, I was also busy with social activities for my community to give them awareness about the DAFI scholarship and other opportunities I always believe in sharing knowledge because If a person can give the knowledge to one person in a house it’s equal to a family.

I also participated in a programme called DAFI+ which is on-job training and completed an internship and training with Pakistani Startup companies. I think among Afghan youth we have a lot of people who can contribute to Pakistan and Afghanistan if they are given the right opportunities. At the National Incubation Center (NIC) in Peshawar, I met other DAFI scholars, and together we had some good ideas for entrepreneurial projects. After which I, along with my friend, applied the start-up idea we had, “Wah-Mantu”, and was selected for pre-incubation training at NIC, Peshawar. It was a tough Competition between 450+ Startup Ideas and fortunately, we were among the 17 who were selected.

After completion of my university and research, I got an interesting result that behind the violence in any community or family there is reason unemployment and lack of money in the Pocket. Still, as we know there are too few opportunities for the host community, therefore, they are unable to facilitate the Refugee community. Still, we can together solve this problem by focusing on entrepreneurship because it can take the ratio of violence downwards and create more opportunities both for the host and refugee communities. I am really thankful to the Government of Pakistan for giving us such opportunities like studying and living such an amazing life and I hope in the future we, the youth can contribute to both countries as We all believe Pakistan like our second homeland.

Being the father of a Daughter I would like to see my daughter as a Doctor helping the people because I strongly believe in females’ rights and quality education for females as well because they are the backbone of any community an educated woman can give an educated family to a community and a Good mindset.

Along with all these I have also been given chances in some events from different Organizations to talk about myself and others I would mention activities here:

  1. I was in a Panel Decision on the 2018 World Refugee Day which UNHCR Peshawar arranged
  2. I have also given a three-day workshop to Afghan students arranged by Inspire Pakistan.
  3. I also have a Page (INFO AR) Information for Afghan Refugees) through which I help my Community.
Due to my awareness program, there are the names of some students who are taking their DAFI scholarships which always give me a wonderful feeling.
  • Farkhunda Khawari
  • Qudratullah Afghan
  • Zarmina
  • Asia Ahmadzai
