From Refugee to a Scientist: Suleman Khan Zadran’s Inspiring Quest for Scientific Discoveries

Early Life

It’s a story of an Afghan refugee named Suleman Khan when he and his family sought safety in the town of Mansehra, Pakistan, leaving behind difficult circumstances in Afghanistan. As an Afghan refugee, he faced many challenges, but he never gave up on his dream of getting an education. Despite the tough times, he remained determined to learn and build a brighter future for himself,  his family, the Afghan nation, and for humanity.

High school journey

Suleman’s academic journey started at High School Number 2 Mansehra, where he displayed immense dedication to his studies. In 2010, he graduated from high school, and his thirst for knowledge continued to grow. He enrolled in Al-Quran Beacon College, where he completed his higher secondary education in 2012.

Bachelor’s degree duration

Driven by a passion for genetics, he began his university life in the same year. Through his exceptional performance in the entrance exam conducted by the Department of Genetics at Hazara University, he secured a top position in Bachelors in Genetics program. His dedication and hard work paid off, and he graduated in 2016.

Master’s degree duration

However, Suleman’s desire for knowledge was unstoppable, and he set his sights even higher. He appeared for the entrance exam at the renowned Centre for Human Genetics, Hazara University, for a Master’s degree. Once again, Suleman’s determination shone through as he topped the entrance exam, securing his place among the brightest minds. During his Master’s program, he undertook an exciting research project under the guidance of Dr. Muhammad Ilays.

Master’s degree research

His research was focused on evaluating the maternal lineage of the Afghan population and studying the genetic disorders prevalent among them. His findings were groundbreaking, and he published the maternal lineage of the Afghan population in the esteemed Meta Gene journal. Furthermore, his research on genetic disorders in the Afghan people was published in the Journal of Genetics and Genomics. Suleman’s Master’s journey concluded in 2019, leaving an indelible mark on the scientific community.

Ph.D. Journey

With a passion for oncology, Suleman set his sights on pursuing a Ph.D. abroad. In 2020, he applied to the University of Bologna, the oldest university in the world and the ranked first University in Italy. The university’s Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology announced ten seats worldwide for Ph.D. fellowships. Among a pool of exceptional candidates, Suleman’s outstanding academic achievements stood out, and he was selected for the Ph.D. fellowship. Under the esteemed guidance of Prof. Giovanni Perini and Professor Alberto Danielli, a renowned scientist in Italy, Suleman worked on a groundbreaking project focused on developing a novel therapy for pediatric cancer. His brilliance shone through once again as he published three articles in top journals such as Nanoscale and IJMS. His research and innovative approach caught the attention of the scientific community, leading to a momentous opportunity. In April, he was selected for an oral presentation at the Advances in Neuroblastoma Research conference held in Amsterdam, Netherlands. His project was hailed as one of the most significant therapeutic approaches for future cancer treatment.

Journey of Research Fellow in the United States of America

Currently, Suleman finds himself as a research fellow at one of the world’s largest hospitals named Texas Children’s Hospital in the United States of America. Immersed in his work, he focuses on studying cancer treatment using mouse models. His dedication and commitment to scientific advancement continue to leave an indelible impact on oncology.

    The journey hasn’t always been easy but it was definitely worth it. He have gained so much no knowledge, improved his skills significantly during this journey.
